Jun. 09, 2022

The effects of HMB on human skeletal muscle were first discovered by Stephen L. Nissen at Iowa State University in the mid-1990s. As of 2017, HMB has been widely used as a booster supplement for young athletes.

What is HMB?

Beta hydroxy betamethylbutyrate (HMB), also known as its conjugate base, beta hydroxy beta methyl butyrate, is a naturally occurring, its used as a dietary supplement in people and substances and as in certain ingredients of medical treatments designed to promote wound healing and provide nutritional support for people with muscle atrophy due to cancer or HIV/AIDS.

HMBCa is the abbreviation of calcium B-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate which is widely present in plants and animals, such as alfalfa, grapefruit, and catfish.

Benefits of HMB

HMB is used to increase the benefits of weight training and exercise; to treat heart and blood vessel disease (cardiovascular disease), high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. HMB is also used in combination with the amino acids arginine and glutamine to treat weight loss, weakness, and diarrhea (AIDS-related wasting) in people with AIDS.

In healthy adults, HMB supplementation has been shown to increase exercise-induced muscle growth body size, muscle strength, and lean body mass, reduce skeletal muscle damage from exercise, improve aerobic performance, and speed recovery from exercise.

HMB supplement also helps maintain or increase lean body mass and muscle strength in individuals experiencing age-related muscle loss. HMB produces these effects in part by stimulating protein production and inhibiting protein breakdown in muscle tissue. No adverse effects have been found from long-term use of dietary supplements in adults.

Uses and effectiveness

Increasing body weight and muscle in people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Oral administration of HMB, along with the amino acids arginine and glutamine, appears to increase body weight and lean body mass in people with AIDS at 8 weeks of use. This combination may also improve the way the immune system works in these individuals.

Disease-related weight loss (cachexia). Some studies have shown that oral administration of HMB, along with the amino acids arginine and glutamine, appears to increase body weight and lean body mass in patients with cancer-related cachexia after 24 weeks of use. However, taking this combination does not appear to improve body weight or lean body mass in patients with rheumatoid arthritis-associated cachexia after 12 weeks of administration.

High cholesterol. Early studies suggest that HMB may lower cholesterol.

High blood pressure. Early studies suggest that HMB may lower blood pressure.

Heart and blood vessel disease (cardiovascular disease).

Special Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking HMB. Stay safe and avoid using it.

Dosing

The following doses have been studied in scientific studies.

Oral: For the treatment of AIDS-related weight loss, weakness, and diarrhea (AIDS-related wasting): 3 grams of HMB in combination with 14 grams each of arginine and glutamine in two divided doses daily.

Side effects of HMB

Short-term oral administration of HMB is probably safe for most people. Doses of 3 grams or less per day for up to 8 weeks appear to be safe.
