Sesamin: Providing Superior Health Benefits

Aug. 13, 2021

If you want to get healthy, burn fat, and lose weight, many people look to sesame seeds as a viable solution to help speed up their physical condition. However, if you prefer a truly holistic food, both sesame seeds and hemp oil are good sources of heart-healthy fats with many benefits, such as lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol. In addition, studies have shown that sesame oil may also help promote weight loss. Here we will present some of the research and benefits of sesame seeds.

Sesamin research reveals big news

A 2006 study reported on the effects of sesame seed oil on people with high blood pressure. Fifty mixed-sex participants aged between 35 and 60 years were measured at baseline and instructed to consume sesame oil for 45 days and eliminate all other fats from their diet. 45 days later the patients were measured again and the results showed a reduction in triglyceride levels in their blood lipids and a reduction in blood pressure. The participants also showed weight loss and a decrease in body mass index (BMI).

For the next 45 days, participants were asked to return to any fats they had previously consumed. When the subjects were reassessed on day 90, blood pressure and triglyceride levels were restored to baseline levels. The researchers concluded that the results demonstrated a possible association with sesquiterpenes and a reduction in blood pressure and lipids in patients with hypertension.

Similarly, a review article published in 2010 in Introduction to Agricultural Sciences noted that sesamin could potentially increase fat-burning processes and reduce body fat storage. Sesamin binds to and activates receptors in the body called peroxisome proliferator activator receptor alpha (PPARalpha) and is involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism, particularly the transcription of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation and lipogenesis. The authors report that "sesamin has the ability to increase the fat burning process and reduce fat storage in the body by altering the gene expression of fatty acid oxidase."

Sesamin and weight loss

Sesamin is a compound derived from sesame seeds from lignans and sesame oil, lignans are plant compounds that communicate in the body to perform actions such as stimulating fat oxidation. Sesame seed oil has been linked to increased fat burning and reduced fat storage4, and its high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may provide other health benefits.

According to a 2006 study published in the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, "the decrease in body weight and body mass index in our study may have been largely due to sesame oil replacement, as its value increased once sesame oil replacement was withdrawn."

Sesamin: providing superior health benefits

Treatment of high blood pressure, but research on sesamin fat loss and fat oxidation in the body remains somewhat limited. While you may reap some health benefits by eating more sesame seeds and sesamin oil, simply adding more sesamin to your diet may not be enough to actually help you burn fat and lose weight.

Before you dive into a sesame seed roll sushi roll, dip your salad in sesame oil, or stock up on a lifetime of sesame seed supplements, let's take a closer look at sesame seeds and how they contribute to fat loss.

Sesamin is good for the body

Nutritional composition of sesame oil.

Watch portion sizes when consuming all fats in your diet.

Sesamin has shown many health benefits, acting as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. Both sesame seeds and oil are sources of healthy fats and are associated with lower blood pressure and lower triglycerides (fats in the blood).

As with all fats, eating more is not always better. It is important to be aware of the recommended daily calorie intake to maintain a healthy weight.
